The Digital Lab is funded by a generous donation in memory of Edgar and Betty Whitman Bayliff. This donation was made by their family in support of the Digital Lab and future library initiatives. Both Edgar and Betty grew up in Putnam County, with Betty being a frequent patron of PCPL in her youth.
The PCPL Digital Lab is where you can digitize your family photographs, audio recordings, film and videos.
The Digital Lab can be used to make digital copies of the following:
VHS and VHS-C tapes
Mini-DV and Hi-8 tapes
8mm and Super 8mm film
Audio Cassettes
Vinyl Records
Photographs, Slides, and negatives (large format and batch scan capabilities)
CD and DVDs, that are not copyrighted
3.25” Floppy Disk
It is not necessary to make an appointment but always feel free to call or email before your visit. From there we will make a recommendation on how to proceed.
In some circumstances we will recommend that patron’s do the digitization themselves, with staff assistance. Other times we will recommend leaving the items with us.
If you have any questions that have not been answered please feel free to call us at 765.301.7202 or email at [email protected].
A: We understand that not everyone knows a lot about computers and the different files. We will work closely with you to ensure that you leave with a nice digital copy of whatever medium or mediums you have brought with you.
A: Digitizing the items ourselves is not part of our daily duties, however, we have made it a practice to offer to digitize VHS, Mini-DV, Hi-8 tapes, and 8mm film and other items for many of our patrons. We will continue to do that as long as people are patient and our daily duties allow us to do so.
A: When the project is complete we will have you purchase (or bring with you) a flash drive which we will transfer all the files onto. You will then be able to listen and see the files on any current computer.
A: It all depends on how much memory is required and we will not know that until the job is completed. If you are not familiar with flash drives and how they work, our staff will explain everything you need to know.
A: We try to complete our jobs as quickly as possible, but it is impossible to tell as it depends on several factors, such as the number of tapes and their length. Also, as this is in addition to our regular duties, we work on these when we have an opportunity.
A: Yes. However, the Digital Lab will only exist as long as there are funds available to maintain our equipment. In fact, it is completely funded by donations, with the original funds given to us by Edgar Bayliff and Betty Whitman Bayliff. If we have digitized something for you and you have the means to donate, that is wonderful, but if you can’t, that is not a problem at all. This has been a popular service and we appreciate everyone that has used it.
