At the PCPL Digital Lab, we offer tools to help you preserve your family’s legacy. Bring in your old photographs, audio cassettes, 8mm films, and video, and let us help you digitize them for the future.
While no appointment is necessary to use the Digital Lab, we may be better able to assist you if you call or email ahead of time. Based on your items and needs we will guide you on the best way to proceed.
Depending on the project, you may choose to digitize your materials yourself with assistance from our staff, or in some cases, we may recommend leaving the items with us to handle the process.

A: Yes. The initial funding for the Digital Lab was generously provided by Edgar Bayliff and Betty Whitman Bayliff. Since then, we’ve been fortunate to receive contributions from many other donors, both large and small. If we’ve digitized something for you and you’re able to donate, it would be wonderful, but if not, that’s completely okay. This service has been popular, and we deeply appreciate everyone who has used it and supported it over the years.
A: To have something “digitized” means converting physical or analog materials, such as photographs, documents, audio tapes, or video tapes, into digital formats. This process creates a digital copy that can be stored, shared, and accessed on computers or other electronic devices. For example, converting an old VHS tape into a digital video file allows you to play it on modern devices without needing the original tape or player. Digitization helps preserve the original content and makes it easier to manage and share.
A: No. However, we understand that not everyone is familiar with computers and various file formats. That’s why we’ll work closely with you to ensure you leave with a digital copy of the materials you’ve brought, regardless of the format.
A: Digitizing items isn’t part of our regular duties, but we frequently offer to convert VHS, Mini-DV, Hi-8 tapes, 8mm film, and other formats for our patrons. We’ll gladly continue providing this service as long as patrons are patient and our workload permits.
A: Once the project is complete, we will ask you to either provide or purchase a flash drive. We’ll transfer all the files onto it, allowing you to view and listen to them on any modern computer.
A: The amount of memory needed will depend on the size of the files, which we can only determine once the job is complete. If you’re not familiar with flash drives or how they work, our staff will gladly guide you through everything you need to know.
A: We strive to complete projects as quickly as possible, but the timeline depends on several factors, including the number of tapes and their length. Since this work is done in addition to our regular duties, we handle these tasks as time allows.
