Part Time Youth Services Assistant

The Putnam County Public Library is looking for a part-time Youth Services Assistant.  Under the direction of the department manager, this position will support the overall mission of the library by effectively providing library services to children, young adults, and their families.    

Candidates should possess some knowledge of and enthusiasm for children’s literature, familiarity and comfort with current technology (personal computers, web-based communication and content platforms, mobile devices, etc), the ability and aptitude to teach and educate patrons and staff in one-on-one or group situations, the ability to handle physical materials up to 40lbs, and work rotating shifts within the department.

The Youth Services Assistant will help provide patron-focused reference and reader’s advisory services for children from birth through eighth grade and their caregivers.  Other duties include assisting in the development and implementation of children’s, teen, and family programs and special events, monitoring and maintaining the Youth Services department and its resources, and preparing booklists, web content, and promotional literature as assigned.  

Job Details:

  • Part-time without benefits
  • 15-25 hours/week
  • Some nights and weekends may be required
  • Salary:  $9.00 - $14.00 per hour commensurate with experience and/or credentials

Library Director

Putnam County Public Library

Supervisor:  Library Board of Trustees

Salary/Schedule:  $60,000 + DOE including full compensation package; Full Time (35+hr/week)

The Putnam County Public Library is seeking a dynamic and vision-oriented library director to expand on modern library services including literacy support, technology instruction/support, programming development, collection enhancement and development, and community outreach and engagement.  The library seeks to position itself as the community leader in providing services surrounding multiple literacies and cultural inclusion by coordinating resources and initiatives with other organizations to better serve the needs of all Putnam County residents.

Primary Function:  Under the direction of the Library Board of Trustees, develops, administers, supervises, and coordinates the work of the Library and staff, performs managerial duties related to personnel, budget, collection development, building maintenance, and library operations and services in conformity to the policies established by the Board of Trustees and the regulations of the Indiana State Library.

Qualifications, Education, Experience, and Skills Required

  • A Master's Degree in Library/Information Science from an accredited college or university; five years of librarianship and three years experience in a supervisory capacity; Library Certification Level 2 or higher
  • Excellent communication and organizational skills
  • Proven ability to administer the activities of a public library and to supervise the work of others including appropriate delegation of duties and oversight of interdepartmental processes and coordinations
  • Ability to oversee and implement strategic planning and mission-oriented initiatives
  • Demonstrated understanding of 21st century library trends and challenges and their impact on Putnam County
  • Proven knowledge of standard library principles and practices, concepts of freedom of speech, copyrights, collection development, patron confidentiality, censorship, and other library ethical issues
  • Strong technology skills including the use of various productivity, communication, and creative platforms as well as a clear vision for the role of technology in a public library
  • Thorough ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with superiors, subordinates, associates, officials of other agencies, and the general public

Specific Duties

  • Plans, implements, and evaluates library services
  • Develops, implements, and evaluates long and short term goals and objectives
  • Develops and administers policies concerning library operations, budgets and programs
  • Provides supervision and delegates responsibilities to the library staff
  • Recruits and recommends employment of library personnel and recommends promotions, transfers, or termination of staff
  • Organizes, trains, assigns, and evaluates personnel and volunteers
  • Conducts staff and committee meetings
  • Prepares the annual budget and presents and defends budget requests before the Library Board
  • Directs and controls the expenditure of fund allocations within constraints of approved budgets
  • Represents the library and speaks before community, civic, and other groups regarding the objectives and activities of the library
  • Establishes and maintains effective working relationships with other governmental agencies, civic, and community groups as well as the general public
  • Oversees a balanced schedule of library programs and special events to meet the immediate and long-range goals of the library and the community
  • Purchases new equipment and furnishings
  • Accepts and acknowledges gifts of money and library materials
  • Pursues and applies for grant money
  • Prepares monthly financial, statistical, and operational reports to Library Board at monthly meetings and prepares annual financial, statistical, and operational reports for the Indiana State Library
  • Supervises maintenance of library building, equipment, and furnishings
  • Evaluates collection for balance and comprehensiveness
  • Supports and facilitates the work of the Friends of the Library
  • Prepares questionnaires and surveys to evaluate public responses to the library
  • Keeps informed of current developments in library field by attending workshops, professional meetings, and reading current literature
  • Maintains membership in professional organizations
